MY JOURNEY

1995-1999

HIGH SCHOOL

Hillmorton High School, Christchurch
High school is where I developed my hunger for art. I had a wonderful environment of art teachers and print makers to nurture my keen interest. I took up all and every art related subject I could; painting, print making, design, CAD graphics. Even life drawing with the adult students on Monday nights and art history via correspondence with Wellington.

1981

BORN

Christchurch, New Zealand

Born and raised on the outskirts of the South Christchurch suburbs, I had plenty of watercolour pencils and nature to inspire me growing up. I took up drawing lessons with Dad on Mondays at age 5 after he blew my mind teaching me how to draw houses in 3D.

2000 - 2003

VISCOM

Christchurch School of Art & Design
The Visual Communications, Bachelor of Design was a wonderful 3 year degree I completed in my early adult life. I continued my life drawing skills and mastered in print making to balance the now ubiquitous computer created media dominating design. It was a well balanced course. Art history was also a key subject, providing insight into the rationale of the artist's mind, or sometimes the irrational as it would seem.

2002

HIGH 5TREET PROJECT

Polytechnic School of Art & Design Exhibition

Celebrating Christchurch's creative hub High Street, I designed and silk screened posters for the promotion of our Art School's High 5treet Exhibition. The posters were also then miniaturised and posted on a 10m graffiti mural of High Street in an alley way in between two shops as a joint submission with fellow student and prolific street artist 'Dcypher' Guy Ellis.

2002

SIGN WRITING

Laser Engraving & Etching

To offset my student loan and the cost of living, I found a part time job working in a sign writing business in Christchurch. Here I was introduced to the fascinating world of laser engraving whilst finishing my degree and I managed to sneak a few projects through the Laser machine for my 3D class

2002

BOARD ART EXHIBITION

Centre of Contemporary Art

I participated in a skatebaord art exhibiton with local artists at the Chrirstchurch's former, now sadly demolished, premier exhibition space. The Center of Contemporary Art (COCA).

2002

EXHIBITIONISM

Centre of Contemporary Art (COCA)

Christchurch School of Art & Design showcase the graduates major works culminating at the end of 2002.

2003-2005

LONDON

CLEARCHANNEL UK

I created a position designing liveries for London Taxi cabs. Taxi Media, a division of Clearchannel UK,  had no previous designer before I started working in the office as a receptionist. I got in the production manager's ear and before long I was working with major brands like Vanity Fair Magazine, Quicksilver and Connolly. In effect designing 3 Dimensional billboards on wheels.

2004

CAMPAIGN OF THE MONTH

VANITY FAIR MAGAZINE

I was awarded the Clearchannel Campaign of the Month for my work with the Vanity Fair taxi livery design which was a great feeling of accomplishment for the new role.

2009 - 2012

MAMBO

HOTSPRINGS & LICENSING APPAREL

I ventured into fashion at Hotsprings Ltd. We had a few of our own brands, but I became engrossed when we landed Mambo as a license designing kids wear. I found a new zest for creativity. Unrestrained, designing for kids and having fun. I developed the entire premium surf ranges for Myer age 3-14, collaborating with the Mambo team in Manly.
It was the highlight of my day drawing concepts and developing the prints, then solely managing production from concept to completion.

2005 - 2009

SYDNEY

CLASSIC SPORTSWEAR

Moving to beautiful Sydney, I found my screen printing skills come in handy when designing apparel in licensing for Norton, AFL, NRL supporters ranges and TV shows. A whole new path of designing graphics for Sydney's bustling rag trade.

2012

LUSYDITY

THE TATE GALLERY, GLEBE, SYDNEY

Getting back to my roots, I submitted a painting as a part of a small collective of artists exhibiting in Sydney.

FREELANCER

Deep down, I yearned to delve into graphic design fundamentals like branding, logo design, printed media and learn more about the digital realm. I decided to try it on my own as a freelancer and work through my vast connections I had made since moving to Sydney to get me started. Aaron McClintock Designs was born and I haven't looked back since.
